Come join James Grimmelman as he leads a guided discussion with renowned lawyer, tyopgrapher, and programmer Matthew Buttrick about his work at the intersection of PL and Law. In addition to a retrospective on Matthew’s career, James and Matthew will discuss how PL and law represent concepts, what they have in common and what distinguishes them, and what they do and don’t do well. They’ll wrap up by discussing some other interdisciplinary areas where Matthew’s worked, e.g., font design and typography as a place where the liberal and technical arts meet, and and how LLMs make us look back at what really matters in programming and in law.
